Nigerian Chief of Army Staff General Martin Luther Agwai has been appointed commander of the recently agreed African Union/UN security force in Darfur.
 
East Africa
In Kenya, efforts at negotiating a post-election settlement between President Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga are currently taking place, facilitated by Ghanaian President John Kufour and ex-UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
The new Tanzanian Prime Minister is Mizengo Pinda – appointed after the resignation of Edward Lowassa following corruption allegtions. Another corruption scandal also forced President Jakaya Kikwete to sack Bank of Tanzania governor Daudi Ballali in January.
In Uganda, sources reported the death of Vincent Otti – second in command of the Lords Resistance Army (LRA). Talks between the LRA and the Ugandan government are taking place in Juba, mediated by South Sudan Vice President Riek Machar. The LRA negotiating team is led by David Matsanga.
 
Central Africa
A peace deal has been signed in eastern D.R. Congo between the government and General Laurent Nkunda, whose CNDP party was represented during negotiations by Kambasu Ngeze.
 
Southern Africa
National Commissioner of the South African Police Jackie Selebi was suspended via ‘extended leave of absence’, and resigned as President of Interpol. Jacob Zuma has become the new President of the ANC after victory over incumbent Thabo Mbeki at the recent party congress.
UK businessman Nicholas Van Hoogstraten was arrested in Zimbabwe charged with illegally trading in foreign currency.
 
West Africa
Ivorian Philippe Dacoury-Tabley is the new president of the West African Central Bank (BCEAO).
In Cote d’Ivoire, a case was opened against exiled rebel leader Ibrahim Coulibaly, who is accused of plotting a coup against the government.
In Nigeria, the chairman of the EFCC Nuhu Ribadu was told to vacate his post for a year and was sent on a ‘policy and strategic studies’ course during ongoing anti-corruption investigations.
The trial of former President Charles Taylor resumed at the Hague, under the auspices of the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL).
 
International
Malian Cheick Sidi Diarra has been appointed Special Advisor for Africa to the United Nations Secretary General. Ellen Margreth Loj was appointed UN Envoy to Liberia.
New World Bank President Robert Zoellick visited Mauritania, Liberia, Mozambique and Ethiopia in early 2008.
United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer has been deeply involved in the Kenyan election crisis. Robin Sanders is the new U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria.
