National Housing and Building Research Unit (NHBRU).was established by Cabinet Paper ECC No. 7 of 1970 as a division under of the then Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development. From 1971 to 1985 support was from the government of Tanzania and Norway through NORAD where the Norwegian Building Research Institute acted as consultant to NHBRU.<P>Under the Public Service Reform Programme (PSRP), the National Housing and Building Research Unit (NHBRU) became a Government Executive Agency since 31st August 2001 known as the National Housing and Building Research Agency (NHBRA).<P>The current functions of NHBRA are in line with the National Human Settlements Development Policy of 2002, the National Housing Development Programme 2002, and the Habitat agenda of 1997, and the Tanzania 's vision for 2025. NHBRA has set strategies and business plans, which will improve provision of services to her customers in order to be more effective, efficient and timely |

One of the problems of housing for Tanzania was the high cost of building construction and the affordability by the majority to own decent dwellings. This led to the formation of National Housing and Building Research Unit (NHBRU). Cabinet Paper ECC No. 7 of 1970 established the National Housing and Building Research Unit as a division under of the then Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development. From 1971 to 1985 support was from the government of Tanzania and Norway through NORAD where the Norwegian Building Research Institute acted as consultant to NHBRU. NHBRU worked in various fields within the building sector, the most predominant one has been to undertake research geared to solve problems related to human shelter. The pamphlets, technical guidelines, data sheets, seminars and demonstration houses where the local population were fully involved. Under the Public Service Reform Programme (PSRP), the National Housing and Building Research Unit (NHBRU) became a Government Executive Agency since 31st August 2001 known as the National Housing and Building Research Agency (NHBRA).
