| Notes | Lilongwe - Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika has sacked two of his key ministers, his office said on Friday. Agriculture minister Uladi Mussa and economic and planning minister David Faiti were relieved of their duties with immediate effect on Thursday, the government chief secretary Bright Msaka said in a statement. He did not give reasons for their sacking, but said the president himself had now assumed their portfolios. Mutharika now heads three ministries, including that of the 120 000-strong civil service. Uladi, who was deputy president of Mutharika's Democratic Progressive Party, said he didn't know why he was fired. "It's the president's prerogative ... I don't know because I have not been told officially," he said. Faiti said he was surprised by his sacking, saying "there must be good reasons why I have been removed." Both ex-ministers are lawmakers in Malawi's 193-member parliament. Mutharika does not give explanations when he fires his ministers. - Sapa-AFP [ Retrieved on 27 10 06 - www.iol.co.za ] |
