-To develop and administer a sound foreign policy based on the principles of safeguarding national interests, constructively fostering bilateral and multilateral relations and supporting international peace, stability, justice and prosperity.

-To gather and properly manage and analyse foreign affairs and related information and conduct research in the field of foreign relations and international politics in order to objectively assess, on a regular basis, situations (specific events or general trend) and their socio-economic, political and security related effects on Botswana.

-To maintain effective communication between Botswana and foreign governments and international organisations on all aspects of mutual interest.

-To develop on sound and internationally accepted norms, protocol standards and procedures and apply these consistently to enhance Botswana's foreign policy and foreign relations objectives.

-To develop and maintain effective contact with Diplomatic Missions accredited to Botswana and meet their diplomatic requirements according to internationally accepted standards.

-To safeguard and promote the interests of Botswana nationals abroad.
