The College of Information Technology and Management Systems (CITMAS) was established in 2001 when Mr. Albert Acquah, a Ghanaian resident in the United States of America , dissatisfied with the present state of information technology education in Ghana , wrote a paper for a course he was taking in Societal Development at Walden University . A vast area was acquired at Kenyase, near Kumasi , to construct an ultra-modern 12-classroom campus and 12 offices were constructed with facilities to meet every identified need. Among these facilities are internet connectivity, local area network, routers, office equipment, and a fully dedicated satellite system. The College commenced in October 2002 with four main courses: 1. Certificate in Auto Cad 2. Certificate in Integrated Business Computer Application 3. Diploma in Computer Programming and Operations 4. Diploma in Network Information Systems In January 2004, the Board of Directors voted to convert the College into a University College . This was done to broaden the scope of the college and utilize the vast resources that have been assembled. VISION OF THE UNIVERSITY The vision of Garden City University College shall be “To become the premier University in West Africa with distinctive scholarship and competence in the four core areas of education, research, enterprise and community service”. To this end, the university aims to be a world renowned center of research and scholarship, learning and teaching, intellectual creativity and innovation and to make contribution to regional, national and international communities we serve. MISSION OF THE UNIVERSITY The mission of the university is to effectively blend communication and information technology, business managerial education and rigorous education in arts and sciences as the engine of development and change in the Ghanaian society. That is, to: • use technology to enhance teaching and learning experience by integrating technology into all majors and programs and assist students to become leader in the use of technology in their fields. • attract and retain personnel who are proficient in supporting the use of technology to implement an integrated and comprehensive information/communication system to facilitate global partnerships. • act as lever for the propagation of new technologies so as to harness human resources for the most challenging tasks ahead and to be responsive to the new innovations in communication technology, management and international business, and to be in tune with the contemporary industrial culture and economic environments. • bring about quality improvement, modernization and capacity expansion in the requirements and expectations of the industry in the new globally competitive industrial and economic environments driven by the new technologies. • offer competitive edge information technology, business and entrepreneurship resources management and an all round competitive edge in business promotion, management and citizenry • offer a learning environment that emphasizes the practical knowledge and includes working through case studies and understanding projects for companies. Career development and job placement are top priorities of the university • to develop the next generation of innovators who will become agents for social change in the development process of our society. Graduating students will be prepared and encouraged to be project-oriented and self employed in small, medium scale business of their choice and thus play a vital role in the economic growth of the country. In pursuance of the above, the university shall admit students of any race, color, gender, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students of the school. It shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school administered programs, nor in employment. OBJECTIVES • to provide the highest international standards of ethics and quality in research, teaching and administration. • To provide an academic umbrella to all the industry, businesses and organizations in Ghana as well as government and non-governmental agencies. • To conduct examinations and award degrees and diplomas to candidates in the fields of management, business administration, executive management, marketing, accounting, banking and finance, information technology, computer technology and human resource management as well as in other areas of arts and sciences. • To impart high level quality education in emerging and front ranking areas of Management, Information Technology, Communication Technology and • To develop courses and curricula adaptable to the needs of industry and civil society • To keep pace with the fast changing development in the technology innovations, particularly in the emerging technological areas of Information and Communication Technology. • To fully harness the commercial potential of our research, teaching, and administrative knowledge for the benefit of our community. • Organize programs of Continuing Education in the field of marketing, business management, entrepreneurship, development, information and communication and technology for skill up-gradation of working personnel in both Technical and Non-Technical sectors for Industry and other user organizations. • To develop and maintain active liaison with industry of the region, particularly in the small scale and medium sectors. • To provide consultancy services in technical problem solving and other allied areas. • To promote undergraduate students in international experiences providing participation in study abroad and international internship opportunities. • .Promote the study of foreign languages and increase student proficiency in foreign languages • Expand the university's program's scope beyond teaching to include effective applications of information technology in research, outreach, and program administration • Strengthen student technology and information literacy skills as foundations for lifelong learning • Organize, coordinate, and integrate the various economic and community development activities. • Create policy that encourages and nurtures faculty entrepreneurialism • Create strategic partnerships with the private sector to enhance economic and community development • Establish a university economic and community development council to target efforts, formalize policy, and assess progress • Establish programs designed to increase participation of Ghanaian businesses and industries in international trade • To provide a conducive environment for research and development and translate research findings into practical solutions and products for the benefit of society. Think critically and develop innovative approaches to issues in their professional and academic environments. • Demonstrate the understanding of the ethics and ideals of professionally trained persons, and how the various individuals within a business or governmental department contribute to the success of their organization. • Demonstrate a wholesome and healthy attitude toward work in general and his/her profession in particular. • Develop the confidence basic to good management, and apply the principles of effective management and communication skills. • Develop the ability and competence in the use of modern technology in business and academic applications The Garden City University College has programs and resources to meet the above-mentioned challenges as well as upcoming challenges. In seeking to achieve its aims and objectives, the University shall: • Provide a high quality and stimulating learning environment to enable students to achieve their full potential. • Provide a wide range of educational activities in an enabling environment to ensure that students acquire the necessary technological know-how required for national development. • Collaborate with the religious, civil, public, and private sector authorities for the development, implementation and review of training packages. • Offer courses of study leading to bachelor, masters and doctorate degrees, except for some period of the commencement of such programs of study, Garden City University College and an affiliated institution shall jointly award the degrees. • Collaborate or co-operate with any local or international institutions or organizations whose objectives are similar or complementary to those of the University College . • Sponsor or encourage the publication of the results of studies or research work, which are of academic or practical value. Computer Skills Requirements Upon completion of any of the of the programs offered at the Garden City University College, the student would have acquired basic skills in word processing, electronic mail, and Internet usage. A total of six computer courses have been included in all programs to give the student a functional knowledge in all aspects of information and communication technology. Students would develop hands-on-skills in the use of word processing, electronic spreadsheet and database system as they relate to various business-related operations.
