Economic Cooperation and Social Development Division

The Division of Economic Cooperation and Social Development focuses on coordination and harmonisation of sectoral and macro-economic policies in trade, industry, tourism, communications (transport by air, road, rail, and water) and telecommunications with a view to enhance economic cooperation and integration and increase the capacity of member states to compete in the global economy. It also addresses issues of health and social development, especially in controlling cross-border infectious diseases, like HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

Peace and Security Division
It is enshrined in Article 18.A of the Agreement establishing IGAD, that “member countries shall act collectively to preserve peace, security and stability, which are essential prerequisites for economic development and social progress”. The Peace and Security division therefore focuses on enhancing the capacity of member states in the field of conflict prevention, management and resolution through dialogue, facilitating reconstruction and resettlement of people affected by disaster or conflict and promoting mechanisms to enhance sustainable peace, security and stability in the region.
Sudan Peace Agreement was signed in Nairobi on 9th Jan. 2005

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is a regional grouping of seven Eastern African countries of Djibouti , Eritrea , Ethiopia , Kenya , Somalia, Sudan and Uganda . It was created in 1986 by the Heads of State and Government of member states as the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development (IGADD) following the recurrent and severe droughts and other natural disasters that caused widespread famine, ecological degradation and economic hardship in the Eastern Africa region between 1974 and 1984. IGAD has its Head Quarters in Djibouti , the Republic of Djibouti .
