It is enshrined in Article 18.A of the Agreement establishing IGAD, that “member countries shall act collectively to preserve peace, security and stability, which are essential prerequisites for economic development and social progress”. The Peace and Security division therefore focuses on enhancing the capacity of member states in the field of conflict prevention, management and resolution through dialogue, facilitating reconstruction and resettlement of people affected by disaster or conflict and promoting mechanisms to enhance sustainable peace, security and stability in the region. <P>Sudan Peace Agreement was signed in Nairobi on 9th Jan. 2005<P>In the medium - term the following programmes and projects are being pursued: <P>Conflict Early Warning and Response Mechanism <P>Coordination of IGAD Peace Initiatives <P>Regional strategy to prevent and combat terrorism <P>Coordination of East African Standby Brigade <P>IGAD Inter-Parliamentarian Assembly and the IGAD NGO/CSO Forum <P>Disaster risk management <P>Refugees and Internally Displaced persons <P> |
