The Summit is the ultimate policy-making institution of SADC. It is responsible for the overall policy direction and control of functions of the Community. The Summit meet once a year around August/September in a Member State at which a new Chairperson and Deputy are elected |
| Activities |
The functions of Summit shall be as follows:<P>Summit shall consist of Heads of States or Governments of all Member States, and shall be the supreme policy-making institution in SADC; <P>The Summit shall be responsible for the overall policy direction and control of the functions of SADC; <P>The Summit shall adopt legal instruments for the implementation of the provisions of this Treaty; provided that Summit may delegate this authority to the Council or any other institution of SADC as the Summit may deem appropriate. <P>The Summit shall elect a Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of SADC from among its members for an agreed period on the basis of rotation; <P>The Summit shall meet twice a year; <P>The Summit shall decide on the creation of Directorates, other institutions, committees and agencies as the need arises; <P>The Summit shall appoint the Executive Secretary and Deputy Executive Secretary, on recommendation of the Council; <P>Unless otherwise provided in this Treaty, the decisions of the Summit shall be by consensus and shall be binding. <P> |
