| Stated Role |
The Organ is responsible for promoting peace and security in the region. It reports to the SADC Summit and is headed by a Troika, consisting of a Chairperson, Incoming Chairperson and Outgoing Chairperson. The SADC Summit and Organ Troikas are mutually exclusive. A Ministerial Committee comprising of the ministers responsible for foreign affairs, defence, public security and state security from each of the State Parties reports to the Chairperson and is responsible for the co-ordination of the work of the Organ and its structures. Ministers of Foreign Affairs of each Member State perform the functions of the Organ relating to politics and diplomacy within the Inter-state Politics and Diplomacy Committee. Ministers for Defence, Public Security<P>and State Security work through the Inter-state Defence and Security Committee. |
| Activities |
Organ on Politics, Defense and Security Affairs - the Extra-Ordinary Summit adopted the Report of the Ministerial Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Security which met on November 23, 2000 in Harare, Zimbabwe and addressed the following issues, pertaining to the Organ, in particular that: <P>The Organ should be coordinated at the level of Summit on a Troika basis and reporting to the Chairperson of SADC. <P>The Chairperson of the Organ shall be on a rotation basis for a period of one year. <P>The Member State holding the Chairpersonship of the Organ shall provide the Secretariat services. <P>The Chairperson of the Organ shall not simultaneously hold the Chair of the Summit. <P>The structure, operations and functions of the Organ shall be regulated by the Protocol on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation which shall be submitted to Summit in Blantyre in August 2001 for approval and signature. |
