The AU and UN Special Envoys (SEs) on Darfur, Messrs. Salim and Eliasson respectively, made their second trip to Sudan from 23 to 28 March. In this round they broadened the scope of their discussions and met the principal opposition parties in Khartoum, Arab tribal leaders and members of civil society organizations (CSOs) both in Khartoum and Darfur, and held talks with senior members of the government in Khartoum and Darfur. Their meetings included discussions with key international partners. On behalf of the team, SE Eliasson accepted an invitation of the Eritrean President and visited Asmara, during which he held fruitful talks with President Issaias who agreed to coordinate efforts for Darfur with the joint AU-UN mediation team. SE Eliasson also travelled to Chad and met representatives of the Chadian and Eritrean governments in N’Djamena, including the Chadian Prime Minister. He also met the representatives of several non-signatory factions in Abeche. The SEs also consulted Darfurian stakeholders who had not been represented in the Abuja talks, such as CSOs and Arab tribal leaders. The SEs repeatedly stressed on the urgency of improving the humanitarian situation on the ground and called for the cooperation of all stakeholders towards this end. They concluded their visit with a briefing to the press. [ Retrieved on 11-06-07 - http://www.unmis.org/english/documents/DPAmoitor/DPAMonitor-;Issue09.pdf ] |
