Notes Kintampo Health Research Centre is a well-established, African-based, research centre. The African identity of KHRC is important as it emphasises African solutions to African health challenges. KHRC is one of three field research centres of the Health Research Unit of Ghana Health Service established in 1994. KHRC is situated in the middle belt of Ghana in the Brong Ahafo Region. However the work of KHRC has implications for health policy and practice throughout Ghana and Africa.

Kintampo health research centre was started in 1994 by the late Dr Paul Arthur and provides a base for field epidemiological and other health research in the forest-savannah transition ecological and cultural zone of the country.
The Centre continues to operate in the 4 contiguous districts in the Brong Ahafo region namely, Kintampo, Nkoranza, Techiman, and Wenchi, with Kintampo as the headquarters. The Seroconversion project has started and the work is being done in the Offinso district of the Ashanti region, precisely in Akumadan and Nkenkensu towns
Our Vision
To develop and sustain local and international based health research and development resource centre capable of generating new knowledge and relevant information, regarding priority problems in health systems at the district, national and international level through effective scientific research, training and services aiming at better health and community development
To provide and integrate quality health care, health education and biomedical research to improve the health status of less privileged people in the region.
Our Mission
To serve as a centre of excellence in carrying out relevant field/ clinical epidemiological studies that evaluate the impact of health intervention.
Priority Research Areas
Malaria epidemiological studies; malaria drug intervention studies and malaria vaccines trials
Maternal, child and neonatal studies; incorporating new maternal, child and neonatal intervention studies to help control mortality among these vulnerable group.
Micronutrient initiatives: use of “Sprinkles” to control anaemia; use of vitamin A and other micronutrients to control infant/child morbidity/mortality.
HIV/AIDS: Evaluating novell approaches that will help improve the use of VCT services as a way of assessing potential HIV cases for early treatment
Mental Health research: role of cannabis in the proliferation of schizophrenia; the prevalence of mental health depression among post-partum mothers and the causes; Dementia among the aged and the extent of denial of health support.
