| Notes |
The idea for a united South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef) was conceived at a meeting of the Black Editors' Forum, the Conference of Editors and senior journalism educators and trainers, held in Cape Town in October 1996. Delegates decided to unite in a new organisation that recognised past injustices in the media and committed itself to a programme of action to overcome them, as well as defending and promoting media freedom and independence.
