Stated Role We connect people with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK to build lasting relationships around the world
Activities Our purpose is to build mutually beneficial relationships between people in the UK and other countries and to increase appreciation of the UK’s creative ideas and achievements. <P>This work is driven by our strong belief in internationalism, a commitment to professionalism and an enthusiasm for creativity. Geographical Focus
Notes We are incorporated by royal charter. In the UK we are registered as a charity (not-for-profit organisation) and operate as an executive non-departmental public body. A non-departmental public body is a national public body that operates independently of government, but for which ministers are ultimately responsible. Many non-departmental public bodies have a sponsoring government department. In our case, this department is the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
HOW WE ARE GOVERNED
We receive strategic direction from a board of trustees. The board elects its own members with the exception of one, who is nominated by the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. All members serve for a term of three years and may stand for re-election. The executive direction of our organisation is carried out by Martin Davidson, our Chief Executive and supported by a Senior Management Team.
OUR ADVISORY BODIES
Our strategies for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are each supported by National Committees. Our strategies for our work in the arts, knowledge and information, education and training, science, engineering and environment, governance, and English teaching, are each supported by Advisory Committees. We also have an Advisory Board; this is a policy forum that supports the Board of Trustees and the organisation by providing perceptions and insights into our work and the context in which we are, and will be, operating. The Advisory Board meets once a year.
HOW WE ARE FUNDED
We receive a core grant-in-aid from the Foreign and Commonwealth Department, which in 2005/06 was £189m. We also earn income from teaching English, conducting British examinations overseas, and managing development and training contracts. Our overall turnover in 2005/06 was £517m.
