In April 1998, the Société Nationale des Pétroles du Congo (SNPC) was created as a separate but wholly state-owned entity to administer the government’s oil interests. Bruno Itoua was the first CEO of SNPC, replaced by Denis Gokana in January 2005. As an independent entity, it was created to market oil on behalf of the state and to represent Congo’s interests with the private operators more effectively than the previous state oil company had done.
