| Notes | Biographical Notes Ms. SHOPE-MAFOLE obtained an MSc in Telecommunications Engineering from the ‘Jose Antonio Echeverria’ Higher Institute of Technology (ISPJAE) in Havana, Cuba in 1983. She is currently the Chairperson of the Presidential National Commission on Information Society and Development established by President Mbeki in his State of the Nation Address in February 2001. Ms. SHOPE-MAFOLE has held various responsibilities at national and international levels, the most notable of which are the following: Member of the United Nations ICT Task Force whose principal Task is to advise Secretary General of the UN, Kofi Annan, on matters related to bridging the Digital Divide. Chairperson of the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), being the first female to hold a responsibility of this nature and level in the history of the ITU. Member of the e-Africa Commission, Task Team responsible for the development and implementation of the NEPAD ICT Programme. Advisor to the Minister of Communications of the Republic of South Africa, Hon. Jay Naidoo. Member of the Board of the Council for Industrial and Scientific Research, CSIR. Member of the ICT Advisory Board of Women’s Development Banking (WDB). Member of the first Council of the Independent Broadcasting Authority, the former South African Broadcasting Regulator. First Chairperson of the National Telecommunications Forum. Deputy Chairperson and Secretary for International Affairs of the Youth League of the African National Congress. Winner of the African ICT Lifetime Achievement Award.
