Mucavele is a founder member of the Nepad team: he chaired the steering committee that, in 2001, pulled together the rival ideas of Mbeki, Nigeria's Olusegun Obasanjo and Algeria's Abdelaziz Bouteflika. The resulting Millennium Africa Plan was renamed Nepad later that year.
