| Notes | Biography of Tidjane Thiam -------------------------------------- Aviva announced Tidjane Thiam’s resignation from the company on 21 September 2007 more about Tidjane Thiam’s resignation from the company Tidjane Thiam is group executive director, Aviva Europe, responsible for all Aviva’s European businesses outside the UK. Aviva’s European portfolio includes mature businesses in the developed markets of France, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain, and the fast-growing emerging markets of Central and Eastern Europe, including Poland, Russia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania and Turkey. Tidjane joined Aviva in November 2002 as group strategy and development director. He became responsible for Aviva’s European operations in January 2006 and was appointed to the Aviva board with effect from 01 May 2007. Tidjane began his career in 1986 in Paris as an international consultant with McKinsey & Company. From 1986-94 he worked for McKinsey in Paris, New York and several European Union countries, focusing on insurance companies and banks. In 1994 he returned to his country, Ivory Coast, to become the chief executive officer of the National Bureau for Technical Studies and Development (the BNETD), reporting to the President and the Prime Minister. In 1998 he was appointed chairman of the BNETD and Minister of Planning and Development of Ivory Coast, which he held until December 1999. He was responsible for strategic planning, co-ordination of public investment in infrastructure and poverty alleviation. In recognition of his work Tidjane was named a member of the Davos World Economic Forum’s annual 1999 Dream Cabinet. After the December 1999 coup, Tidjane left Ivory Coast and rejoined McKinsey in Paris in May 2000 as a partner. He was one of the leaders of McKinsey’s financial institutions practice in France and in Europe. Tidjane was a member of the Commission for Africa, established in 2004 by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, to take an independent look at the challenges facing the continent and to make recommendations for its future. In 2007 Tidjane was chosen as the recipient of the INSEAD Trophy of the Year.
