Notes The Honourable Dr. D. R. Phororo was born at Likhutlong in the district of Butha-Buthe in 1934.
He did his Primary School Education at Ha Rantuba, Peka proceeding to enter Lesotho High School in 1948 where he finished his Matriculation in 1952.
In 1953, Honourable Phororo enrolled to pursue further studies at Fort Hare University College (Rhodes) in the Republic of South Africa studying Chemistry and Zoology. He graduated with a BSc. In 1955.
His employment record stated in 1956, first as a Science Teacher at Morija Training College and then joined the Tanganyika Agricultural Corporation, Tanzania as a Soil Chemist Laboratory Analysis of Soils. He was with Corporation until 1958.


From 1958 to 1962 he went for further studies, assisted by Sethaba-thaba fund at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Edinburgh University, Scotland where he gained the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (B.V.M.S.) and became a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Medicine (M.R.C.V.S.).
Having amassed an armamentarium of academic and professional qualifications, Honourable Phororo went to Belfast, Northern Ireland for 18 months employed by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture as a Veterinary Officer.
He returned home in 1964 and was offered a post of Veterinary Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture. He held this position until 1970 when he was made Deputy Director of Veterinary and Livestock Services. During this period he concentrated on the organisation of wool and mohair farmers to form associations for improved marketing of their products as well as improvement of their flocks through breeding. Two years later, he was promoted to a full Directorship with increased responsibilities. He kept this post until 1974 when he advanced to the position of Permanent Secretary.
For the next five years as Permanent Secretary, Dr. Phororo was the main actor in the policy formulation process and advisory on all aspects of agricultural development, responsible to the Minister and the Cabinet.
Having served his term as the top civil servant in the Ministry, Dr. Phororo changed routes in 1979 to become an international civil servant joining the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) as Country Projects Officer for Tanzania and Zimbabwe based in Rome for two years.
While continuing his services with FAO in 1981, Dr. Phororo once more added another string to his bow by doing a Diploma in Extension Methods with the University of Pisa, Italy. He has written extensively on agricultural matters and his work has been published in scholarly journals at home and abroad.
Honourable Phororo continued with the FAO as Country Projects Officer for Tanzania until 1986 when he became the FAO Senior Technical Advisor to the Lesotho Government. He was Minister of Agriculture from 1979 to 1990. From 1991 to 2002 he was working as a Private Veterinary as a Consultant. He was also a farmer and a journalist at that time. He became a member of the Lesotho Senate from 2002, the position he is still holding. After 2003 Cabinet re-shuffling he was appointed the Minister Agriculture and Food Security.
Mr. Phororo has made contributions within the community, as he was always involved in the farming enterprises with poor landholders. Internationally he was a member of International Development, a member of British and South African Veterinary Association and has participated in New Partnership for Africa’s Development meetings, environmental issues, Economic Commission for Africa, and Southern African Develop Community summits. He was Chairman of Royal Education Development Trust and Trustee Media Institute of Southern Africa. He won the award of Distinguished Service to the Community, conferred by the Dictionary of International Biography.
The Honourable Phororo enjoys farming, especially dairying, vegetable production and dry land. He likes jogging, listening to music, and reading about development, politics and scientific affairs. He also admires journalism and loves religion.
He is married with three children; a boy and two girls.
