Notes The Honourable Thomas Motsoahae Thabane was born in Maseru on May 28th, 1939.
He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Africa (UNISA) in 1964 with majors in Political Science and English.
He worked as a civil servant for 26 years of which he served as Principal Secretary in various government ministries, including Justice from 1972 to 1976, Health from 1978 to 1983, Foreign Affairs from 1983 to 1985 and Interior from 1985 to 1986. From 1990 to 1991 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs, Information and Broadcasting.
Mr. Thabane was Secretary to the ruling Military Council and also political adviser to the Military from 1986 to 1988. From 1988 to 1990 he was the Government Secretary.

From 1970 to 1972 he worked in the Ministries of Health and Education as Assistant Secretary (Administration). From 1966 to 1970 he was First Clerk Assistant to the Senate and Deputy to the Clerk of the Senate in the Parliament of Lesotho.
He escaped to South Africa after a Military coup in April 1991, where he started a small operation as a development consultant. Following the April 1993 democratic elections, he re-opened an office as a development consultant and commodities broker. From March to June, 1994, he joined the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) as Provincial Office Administrator for the Free State region in South Africa. From August 1994 to March 1995, he ran a private consultancy and commodity brokerage.
From 1995 to 1998 the Honourable Thabane was appointed a special political adviser to the Prime Minister Dr. Ntsu Mokhehle. He was elected member of parliament for the Abia constituency in the 1998 general elections, and appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs.
He has travelled extensively worldwide. His hobbies include politics, reading, physical fitness, walking, light classic and traditional music, jazz rhythm and blues.
He is married with two sons and two daughters.
