| Notes | The Honourable 'Mathabiso Angeline Lepono was born in Maseru on 13th July 1942. She started her primary education at Blessed Martin Depores in Killeny, Johannesburg in 1951 and completed standard 7 in 1957. From there she went to St. Stephens High School and then Mohale's Hoek High School, obtaining her Junior Certificate. She has also done some typing courses. Honourable Lepono's employment record shows that she did clerical work at Mohlomi Hospital, and at the Ministry of Local Government. She was also once a typist for the Clerk of Court in Mafeteng, and an extension worker at a now phased out Grass Roots Initiative Programme (GRJSP) and a Rural Development officer. She was on attachments with the extension workers on Rural Development activities which were funded by Lesotho Wales Link in 1992 where she worked closely with Agricultural Office, She played several roles in her community in Likhoele before joining politics. She was once a treasurer for both primary and high school in her area, the executive member of the Lesotho Home Makers Association, a member of several associations including Mafeteng District Planning Committee, Mafeteng District Disaster Management Authority, Ramokoatsi burial Society and Ramokoatsi Village Choir. Honourable Lepono has also supported her local soccer team with transport. At international level she participated in the Associated Countries Women of the World (ACWW) biennial conference in Australia as well as in Nairobi. She is a member of the Lesotho Wales Link. Honourable Lepono also attended a training workshop on rural community Development at the University of Arberytworth in Wales. She was engaged in business from 1970 to 1995, and has formed more than ten women's groups within the Mafeteng District. She has also founded young farmers associations within Mafeteng. She encourages people to develop and rehabilitate degraded land on voluntary basis, as well as to form income generating groups. Mrs. Lepono a member of the ruling Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) won a seat for the Likhoele Number 53 constituency in the May 1998 General Elections. She was appointed Minister of Environment, Gender and Youth Affairs on July 22 1999. Her personal interests and hobbies include handicrafts, community development activities, vegetable and flower gardening, politics and praying. She is married, with four sons and a daughter. |
