Notes Congolese President Laurent Kabila has appointed a deputy defense minister as part of moves to deal with a growing rebel threat in the east of the country, officials said Thursday.
Kabila, who doubles as defense minister, named as his deputy Denis Kalume Numbi, a former general under dictator Mobutu Sese Seko whose 32-year rule was toppled by Kabila in May 1997. Kalume joined the armed campaign against Mobutu soon after the former Zaire's third city of Kisangani, in the jungle interior, fell to Kabila's forces in early 1997.
