| Notes | Guinea president sacks peace PM: Guinea's President Lansana Conte has sacked the prime minister [Lansana Kouyate] appointed as part of a deal in 2007 to end deadly riots that paralysed the country. (...) Ahmed Tidiane Souare, a former minister of mines and ally of Mr Conte, has been named as his replacement. No reason was given for the sacking, which was announced on state television on Tuesday night. [ BBC Africa - 21 May 2008 - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7412596.stm ] Former UN diplomat Lansana Kouyate was appointed by President Conte in February 2007 under a deal to end a general strike against the president's rule. He was on a list of candidates proposed by the opposition and unions. He replaced Eugene Camara, a close aide to the president, whose appointment had fuelled unrest. Mr Kouyate has more powers than his predecessors, including the right to appoint and dismiss ministers. In living up to his supporters' expectations he must deal with grave social and economic challenges.
