May 7, 2006 — Ever since joining the SPLM/A, Dr. Riek Machar an Engineer from Khartoum University and PhD holder from London University, rose steadily to become Second in Command of the SPLM/A under the leadership of late Dr. John Garang de Mabior. Despite his high position in SPLM/A, his egoistic tendency and greediness for power forced him to engineer ethnic tribal conflict between his ethnic tribe (the Nuer) against Dr. John Garangs tribe (the Dinka). He mobilized some of his tribesmen (Naath = Nuer) around him and wrong groups of Southern Sudanese to try to oust Late Dr. Garang in 1991 but after failing miserably he deserted SPLM/A leaving it weakened.

• One of the earliest members of the Sudan People’s Liberattion Army (SPLM) under John Garang (1984).
• 1994 – 2000: Became the leader of the South Sudan Independence Movement (SSIM)) after splitting from (SPLA/M) in 1991 with Lam Akol and Gordon Kong Chuol to form SPLA – Nasir with the intent of overthrowing leader John Garang.
• June 1991: Riek married Emma McCune, a British aid worker.
• 1997: Riek signed the Khartoum Peace Agreement, which offered the South self-determination on paper and forced the National Islamic Front to adopt a democratic constitution. After the signing, he was the leader of South Sudan Defense Forces, SSDF, and renamed SSIM.
• 1997 – 2002: The Peace Agreement made Machar the Assistant to the President of the Republic of the Sudan and the President of the Southern Sudan Coordinating Council, (August 7, 1997 - January 31, 2000).
• Machar received a Doctor of Science in robotic engineering from the University of Bradford.
