| Notes | MDC national organizing secretary Executive Mayor of Harare Engineer Mudzuri is the Executive Mayor of Harare, the capital with a population of 2,5 million and serves the satellite towns of Chitungwiza, Norton, Epworth and Ruwa with most of their basic needs and utilities. Mudzuri was elected in March 2002 on an MDC ticket by an overwhelming majority of Harare’s residents and became the city’s first civic leader from the opposition. The Mudzuri-led democratically elected council immediately put into motion a people driven set of transparent development programmes to remedy 22 years of Zanu PF induced misadministration, corruption and vice. The visibility of his turnaround initiatives infuriated the ruling party, leading to Mudzuri’s dismissal and a subsequent resignation of the entire MDC councilors. Since then, the ruling party has banned local government elections in Harare. It has appointed a commission to run the affairs of Harare led by the political turncoat his former deputy. In the short period he led Harare, Mudzuri formulated and managed a capital revenue budget of over US $400 million, covering administration, revenue collection, roads, water and waste water, garbage collection and disposal, education and social amenities. Mudzuri has worked in business advocacy, public life and public administration for the past 20 years. A graduate of Harvard University’s John F Kennedy School of Government, Mudzuri attained a Masters degree in Public Administration. He is a 2006 Mason Fellow in Public Policy and Management. He is currently a non-resident fellow with the Carr Centre for Human Rights and Intra- State Conflict at Harvard University. Mudzuri graduated at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone where he attained a Bachelor of Engineering Civil (Hons) degree in 1987. He joined the City of Harare as a junior engineer in 1987 in the water and sewerage department and rose through the ranks to deputy chief engineer from 1994-2002. A fellow of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers, Mudzuri has extensive experience in consultancy work and has lectured part time on wastewater management at the University. Mudzuri is a founder member of the MDC in 1999 in Budiriro, Harare where he was elected vice- chairman at ward level. He rose through the rank to the position of vice- organizing secretary for Harare Province. In March 2006,Eng Mudzuri was elected National Organizing Secretary at the MDC’s second congress in Harare. He will serve for five years when the next congress is due. Mudzuri was born in Zaka on 4 April 1957, is married to Jabu Mudzuri and the couple is blessed with three children.
