| Notes | ODM's Kenneth Marende beat Mr Francis ole Kaparo in a hotly contested election to become the new Speaker of the National Assembly. Mr Marende polled 105 votes against Mr Kaparo's 101 votes in the third and final stage of the voting to become independent Kenya's sixth Speaker. One vote was spoilt. Marende was born on January 7, 1956. He joined the University of Nairobi where he graduated in law in 1978. He started working as a State Counsel in September 1979 and rose through the ranks to the level of Senior State Counsel. He left the Government in 1984 to go into private practice. Marende worked with Bryson Inamdar and Company until 1988 when he started his own firm, Kenya Style Warender and Company Advocates.
