Dr William (Bill) Thorpe has been ILRI’s Regional Representative, Asia, based in New Delhi since May 2003. Dr Thorpe has a PhD degree in animal breeding from the University of Edinburgh, UK. Prior to joining ILRI in 1986, he worked in research and teaching posts in Zambia, UK and Mexico. From 1995 to 2002, he managed ILRI’s market-oriented smallholder dairy systems research in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. During 2002 and 2003, Dr Thorpe served in research management roles during the transition to ILRI’s current research strategy and management structure. In his current capacity, he works with ILRI’s research managers and supports the development and management of ILRI’s programme in the region. He has particular responsibility for South Asia and China. In the SLP, Dr Thorpe was a principal investigator collaborating with ICRAF and other partners on a project on forage diversity for small-scale dairy in the East African Highlands. In his current position, Dr Thorpe also assists the SLP in liaising with partners and identifying opportunities for collaboration in Asia.
