| Notes | Akukweti`s body expected in Dar 2007-01-05 09:04:39 By Lydia Shekighenda State Minister in the Prime Minister?s Office, Juma Akukweti, 60, who was admitted to a South African hospital while nursing wounds of a plane crash, has died. Yesterday, his body was expected to be flown in from Johannesburg either last night or today. Akukweti, who together with six other people, was involved in a plane crash in Mbeya in mid-December last year, died yesterday morning at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg where he was admitted last week. His death makes the number of people who have died from the Mbeya plane accident to four. Akukweti?s death was officially announced yesterday by the Acting Chief Secretary, Rose Lugembe, during a press conference, which was held at the State House in Dar es Salaam. According to Lugembe, the minister, whose body was severely burnt during the accident, was undergoing treatment at the Milpark Hospital in Johanesburg when he met his death at around midnight on Thursday. She said Akukweti?s body would be flown back to the country yesterday or today. Funeral arrangements will commence once the body arrrives in Dar es Salaam. He was flown to South Africa on December 27, last year after doctors at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Insitute (MOI) of the Muhimbili National Hospital recommended that he should be taken abroad for specialized treatment. The accident occurred on December 16 last year after a Cessna make six seater plane crashed shortly after it took off from Mbeya airstrip. A photojournalist with Tanzania Information Services, Theresia Nyantori, died on the spot. Two other people, an official with the Prime Minister?s Office George Bendera and Chief Co-ordinator of the Agricultural Marketing Programme Nathaniel Katimila, died some days later as they were undergoing treatment at the Muhimbili National Hospital. The pilot of the fateful plane, Martin Sumari and the late Akukweti?s press secretary Nisetus Kanje, sustained injuries and their conditions are improving. Akukweti and his entourage were in Mbeya to inspect the extent of damage caused by the fire that had gutted down a main market. Preliminary investigations conducted by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) cited pilot?s error and bad condition of the airport, as possible causes of the crash. Akukweti was born in September, 1947 in Ligoma Village in Tunduru district. He attended Ligoma Primary School in between 1958 to 1961. He completed studies at Mattaka Middle School in 1965. In 1966, he joined Songea Secondary School, where he studied for three years before being transferred to Tabora High School in 1970. In 1972, he enrolled for the Bachelor of Science with Education (BSc.Ed) degree at the University of Dar es Salaam. In between 1978 to 1979 he joined the East and South Africa Management Institute (ESAMI) and attained an Advanced Diploma in Management. Akukweti became engaged in politics in 1990 when he was elected as a member of parliament for Tunduru constituency. While holding the same post, he was also elected as deputy speaker from 2000 to 2005. In 2006, he was appointed as state minister in the Prime Minister?s Office charged with parliament affairs, a post he served until his death. He is survived by a widow and nine children. * SOURCE: Guardian [ The Guardian (Dar es Salaam) - Retrieved on 5/1/07 - www.ippmedia.com ] EDUCATION School Name/Location Course/Degree/Award Start Date End Date Level ESAMI-Arusha Diploma in Social Management 1977 1978 DIPLOMA University of Dar es Salaam BSc.
