| Notes | "A statement issued by BoT said the office of central bank Governor Benno Ndulu had learnt with shock on Tuesday night that Ballali died on Friday last week in Boston, the US, where he was understood to have been undergoing treatment." http://www.ippmedia.com/ipp/guardian/2008/05/22/114894.html [ Retrieved on 23 MAY 2008 ] See: http://allafrica.com/stories/200801300622.html [ Retrieved on 11 FEB 2008 ] Former governor of the Bank of Tanzania Daudi Ballali, led a dramatic life during his tenure at the central bank and when he tried to escape from disgrace on December 19, last year, his move was foiled by the appointing authority. Sensing impending danger following the completion of external audit on the bank's external payments arrears (EPA), Mr Ballali decided to resign, citing health problems. Credible sources within the central bank believe that the former governor was trying to pre-empt the much awaited EPA report that has finally established payment of Sh133 billion to ghost companies. While Mr Ballali was trying to escape the sack by offering his resignation before the EPA report was released, his boss viewed this move as a trick and decided to remain silent. Sources further told The Citizen this week that the State had wanted to act against Mr Ballali after it had gone through the EPA report. The move was aimed at boosting public confidence as well as gaining credibility of Tanzanians who, in the past two years, have been lost trust on the manner the Government was dealing with corruption allegations. [ he Citizen (Dar es Salaam) - 10 Jan 2008 - http://allafrica.com/stories/200801100512.html ] BoT governor cornered MEMBERS of Parliament have increased pressure on the government to explain the alleged personal involvement of the governor of the Bank of Tanzania, Dr Daudi Ballali, in the external debt funds scandal now rocking the central bank. Opposition legislators are now demanding an official statement from the Minister for Finance, Ms Zakia Meghji, on spreading allegations of alleged gross mismanagement of funds in BoT’s foreign exchange coffers that now appear to be targeting Dr Ballali in person.
