An arrest warrant has been issued against Jean-Pierra Bemba, the Democratic Republic of Congo's former rebel leader, by the state prosecutor.

Bemba, who lost a presidential election last year, has taken refuge in the South African embassy in Kinshasa as fighting continues in the capital for a second day.

"This is a rebellion ... he has committed high treason," Antoine Ghonda, roving ambassador attached to the president's office, told Reuters. [ Al Jazeera - 23 Mar 2007 - http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/A8388C69-;939A-49DD-894A-0B454CF40338.htm ]
