| Notes | Various sports associations have paid tribute to former Youth, Sports and Culture Minister Jafallie Mussa, who has been described as one of the best sports ministers in the advent of multiparty democracy. President Bingu wa Mutharika chucked Mussa from Cabinet last week in one of his major cabinet reshuffles. He swelled it from 36 to 42. Mussa was replaced by Khumbo Kachali.. Kachali sponsored the Northern Region Football League (NRFL) a few years ago. Sports administrators view the firing of Mussa as a major blow to the sports fraternity. “He did quite a good job as Sports Minister but we understand it is the president’s prerogative to hire and fire ministers. Mussa identified problems dodging sports development in the country and it will now be up to the new minister to implement the reforms that he started,” said Ocgam’s president Floriano Massa. Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) general secretary Hackson Chapasa and Volleyball Association of Malawi (Vam) president described Mussa as a humble and hard working minister. “As somebody who has been in sports administration from the one party era to multiparty democracy, I can describe Mussa as one of the best sports ministers in the history of multiparty democracy. He was a very humble, hard working and a listening minister,” said Chapasa. Chapasa also expressed worry with the regular cabinet changes, which he felt do not allow ministers to complete their programmes. Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) president Kezzie Msukwa said Mussa had brought a new dimension in sports development by recognising minority disciplines.. “It was during his tenure that the Malawi national chess team managed to participate in a world chess tournament for the first time. “We will miss him but at the same we welcome Kachali to the sporting world. We hope Kachali will continue with the good work,” said Msukwa. [ Retrieved on 17-05-07 - www.nationmalawi.com ] |
