Ali Mohammed Ghedi (born 1952) is a veterinary surgeon and an African Union officiall; he was relatively unknown in political circles when he was appointed as Prime Minister of Somalia in November 2004. He promised to form an inclusive government, and to strive for reconciliation among Mogadishu's warlords. Mr Ghedi was not linked to any of Somalia's armed groups during the war. He is affiliated to Mogadishu's Hawiye clan, one of Somalia's two main clans, Hawiye and Darod. Ali Mohammed Ghedi is Hawiye Abgal. Ghedi was in exile in Nairobi, the capital of neighbouring Kenya until July, 2005 and is now at Jowhar, one of two towns (the other being Baidoa) being used as a joint capital for the time being, as warlords controlled Mogadishu until June, 2006 when the Islamic Court Union took over. |
