AfDevInfo is an online database
that tracks people and organisations involved in the social, political and
economic development of sub-Saharan Africa. In January 2009 it was acquired by
AfDev.org, a new collaborative project in support of independent African development consultants.
The database was designed in the UK with research conducted by London-based African postgraduate students. After three years of development the project failed to reach its aim of becoming a commercially self-sustaining project, and when not-for-profit funding efforts failed, the database was put into hibernation in October 2008.
Advertising was added to the site to pay for its maintenance. This will be removed once new funding is found. Over the next few months efforts will be made to bring key records and reports back up to date.
It had always been the intention of AfDevInfo to move its data collection efforts into Africa, with a researcher in every country. The acquisition of the project by AfDev.org will hopefully bring this aim to fruition in the near future.
